description

This is the front entrance to Southwest High school, on 47th Street South.

In 1987 I transferred from Minneapolis South to Indio High School in California. I didn't necessarily like the schools here when I left, but I appreciate them more after being in the other system.

I am a 1999 graduate of Southwest High School, and it is very nice to find a beautiful picture of my high school to look at during lonely times at college. It brings back so many wonderful memories of friends and faculty. Thanks!

  • emily   Seattle -- 1999-12-01

Good memories and bad from southwest... but its good to see a familiar site now that I am away from home.

  • Jennie   Ex-Minneapolitan -- 1999-12-01

Thanks for putting this picture up - now I can re-live my "fun" times at SW. I can just come back any time I want for a visit!

  • cb   mpls -- 1999-12-01

I didn't like southwest. The staff didn't respect the students and the school is just plain dirty.
The school was a joke just like all of the other mpls public schools.

  • Kristie   Minneapolis -- 1999-12-06

Jennie, is that Jennie Frohman? Glad to get out and lose the entire popularity issues. Although, a few were actually trendy.

  • Maija   South Minneapolis -- 2000-01-15

The only teacher I have problems with is Mr.Vigen. The dirtyness dosen't bother me ethier.

  • Ann   Decorah, IA -- 2000-04-11

This place will never change, will it? Hope that you are all enjoying being gone as I am... but I still miss it!!!

  • thatch   uptown -- 2000-06-11

the staff doesnt disrespect the students. some of the students disrespect the teachers. it all has to do with the lack of respect in some youth today. i am a student there now, i can say that.
also, the school isnt that dirty. They try hard to clean it up...maybe if students treated it better.

  • Chris Wiegel   Fremont, CA -- 2000-07-28

I'm an old geezer and graduated back in '77. It's good to see the old place hasn't been torn down. It was disappointing to hear about the team name change from the politically incorrect Indians to the Wimps or whatever the new name is.

  • Candy, 1993 Grad.   St. Paul -- 2000-08-29

Oh, this is real cool. It has been a long time. When is the reunion?

  • Mary   Evansville, IN -- 2000-09-05

I personally like having an easy place to get to so that I can keep seeing my old school. It really isn't that bad of a place, as I kept telling myself when I stared at the walls and the doors my freshman year, and I was always happier at SW and as a Laker than I was in Minnetonka as a Skipper.

  • Jim Laville   Ft. Lauderdale, Florida -- 2000-09-12

I'm a 1965 graduate and am so happy to see such a familiar facade. Unfortunately, time has a way of changing the things we love and memories we hold dear are all we have left. It has been just over 35 years since I saw this old school and I thank you for making this image available.

  • mb   mpls -- 2000-11-28

For the funding southwest has, the jantiors do a good job of keeping the school clean. It is not the school's fault for being dirty, it is the students that make dirty. One more piece of information: our math league team is currently 17th in state, and is moving up in the standings.

CLASS OF 2000 ROCKED THE SW

  • Sue Fosseen   Palm Springs, CA. -- 2001-01-25

I love this website! It brings back lots of memories. I am a '71 grad and wondering if there is a 30 year class reunion? Anybody know?

  • Anonymous   Virginia -- 2001-05-06

Wow...Am I surprised to see this place still exists. I worked at both the Westgate and at Dennison's. That was a long time ago.....Seems like it was in a different life.

  • Anonymous   -- 2001-05-06

I grew up near here. Funny to see it again after all these years...

  • Yo momma!!!!!!   west side mpls -- 2001-05-18

My old school was not the worst. The only reason it was dirty because of the students. I am living on the west side now and that is dirty.
    Party forever

  • Emma   South Minneapolis -- 2002-01-18

I laugh very heartily at the comments on this picture.

  • Joe   Minneapolis -- 2002-02-03

I also attended SW, and thought it was a great experience. Not perfect of course, but better than most schools by a long shot. And I for one am glad the school's RACIST mascot name was changed to "The Lakers."

  • Natalie   Wayzata -- 2002-07-16

My boyfriend attends this school right now, and i really haven't heard much good about it, but the students should really show more respoect to the teachers!

  • Ben, Class of '96   California -- 2002-10-31

I loved Southwest. It had its problems, but it was a great place to grow up. When I look back I don't remember dirty hallways, old, abused equipment, or careless teachers; I remember card games during lunch, educators that gave a damn, and the football team that finally won a game my senior year.
They'll tear her down someday, but I'll never forget my four years. Go Lakers!

  • ?   23 blocks down -- 2002-11-28

Ms. Allen is short, and has no idea what is is doing. If she only knew how many teachers talk smack behind her back. Where is our tax payers money going? I know, to staff that can't do anything and just asks questions!

  • Mary   Mpls -- 2002-12-08

I'm currently a freshman at Sw (class of 06) I'm doing a research project on the indian logo vs the anchor symbol...any alumni with information or opinions? please email me if so...

  • john   mpls -- 2003-06-01

I saw that the Indian logo is now covered by a desk. To me that seems pretty disrespectful. Why did that happen? The logo seemed tasteful.

  • Ephraim   MPLS -- 2003-07-26

I remember it all. I had a Blast! Its funny to see some familiar teacher names posted. I still see alot of my class around the area 94!

  • Jim H.   MIAMI FL -- 2003-08-08

Everything changes. I learned to be proud during '70-'72 at SWHS.
SW was the second smallest school in Mpls but won or placed in almost
every sport. I had more fun in college but I wouldn't replace my
SW days. Any SWIMMERS out there?

  • Noah G   Los Angeles -- 2003-09-12

The indian logo was covered up because it was disrespectful to the Native American race. It would have been similiar to a mascot like "the blacks" or "the whities." I just graduated in 2003. I now attend Occidental College in LA. I learned quite a bit at Southwest, despite it's problems with segregation.

  • sean   mpls -- 2003-10-08

i dunno who noahG. is, but i go to southwest and there is no segregation problems whatsoever. The school is very sesitive to such situations. Southwest is pretty good despite all the stupid artwork they put up everywhere.

  • KillBill   Alaska -- 2003-10-17

Does the class of 1998 even exisit?

  • seane   mpls -- 2003-11-07

lizzyb, yer wrong! The slcs are not divided by your race, but by how you are as a student. The fact that ppl in one slc are typicly from a type of race is purely coincidental. Trying to foster a sense of belonging for everyone as a large community just seems too superfluous.

  • Shannon '06'   Minneapolis -- 2003-11-09

Sean, they post up that "stupid" artwork because it helps people realize that school doesn't always mean learning about History or some other boring class like that, it shows that we have talented, amzingly smart people who still can look at the beauty of the world, and not just take everything at face value. It definitly helps me get through the day.

  • LizzyB   Chicago -- 2003-11-11

Sean, I was not suggesting that SLCs are determined by race, that's obsurd. It is not excessive or unnecessary to promote unity among the student body as a whole. For example, I studied history of the Americas last year. One of our units was on revolutionary art in Mexico and Central America. A Dual Immersion arts and history course was studying a lot of the same material. Instead of working with this class and gaining knowledge from various viewpoints, their teacher came to our class to lecture. There was not any contact between students. There are many beneficial partnerships between students that the faculty and administration has the power to impose. These partnerships would be educational and foster a sense of community to the school as a whole. Instead of taking advantage of these opportunities, the students and staff at SW remain happily isolated in their respective SLCs.
Asking that art no longer be displayed in the hallways is like asking the bands and choirs at SW not to perform. Just like a concert, you can choose to ignore the art. But please understand that some people enjoy it and respect the artist for the time and energy the put into their work.

  • Phil   Phoenix, AZ -- 2003-12-02

I grew up in Minneapolis but never saw what SW high school looked like. What I remember about SW is that they were a small school and got beat up by most everyone in sports. I'm from the class of 61, Washburn. Thanks for the nice Picture.

  • Kathryn M   Minneapolis -- 2003-12-03

It's nice to see a picture of southwest on the internet. Normally I don't see a whole lot about it. Anyway I think it is a little bit stupid to be arguing over the things that are wrong with Southwest. Granted it isn't the perfect school by any means but it is also public and we are guaranteed an education in this country is wonderful. I believe that self expression is wonderful but often things are seen from such a myopic perspective that often self expression is quantified as either positive or negative. However, I think that in order to get a full and unique perspective it is necessary to exceed the bounds of good and bad.I wish people would just take a step back to comprehend all of it instead of letting personal attachments dictate their opinions.

  • #38   the + -- 2004-02-18

05!!!! you guys need to figure out that school is school. Where ever you go you will find the bad things to point out, and instead of looking at all the bad things think about how much fun you had durring those 4 years and for some of you 5 years. Remmber how much fun you had (friends, partys, girls/boys, growing up into the person you are today)

  • Anders   Minneapolis -- 2004-02-21

As a current student at Southwest, I'd say that the desk covering the Indian Head is a more disrespectful gesture than its existence in the first place. Like it or not, the image on the floor is historically significant. It should be roped off like it used to be.

  • Nancy Rose Pribyl   Bloomington -- 2004-03-11

Oddly, the reason given for the removal of the Indian Head (which was foiled a few years back)was that the ropes used to keep people from walking on it created a fire hazard. I thought it was lame at the time and that the several thousand dollars it was going to cost could be used to greater advantage than promoting some PC agenda. So I'm to believe that a solid object like a desk is less of an obstruction and is not a "fire hazard" ? - I may have gone to school there...but I'm not stupid!

  • Dan   Bemidji, MN -- 2004-03-18

As a graduate of Southwest Class of 01 I had a blast at this school. Sure it had its problems but everytime i come home from school and drive by i think of all the goodtimes, being able to win homecoming 2 years in a row, all the dances being able to be wasted and the teachers not caring or skiping out on lunch and going to Big Mikes. The frineds that i met and keep in contact with are the best and i hope future Classes leave with similer memories and not the ones of a dirty school but of that as a great place to spend 4 years.

  • Emily S   Winona MN -- 2004-09-30

I loved Southwest! So many fun times... sometimes I miss it but our class went through a lot and i think most of us were ready to move on. It's cool to read all the comments on here (the good ones anyways) about good times at Southwest... SO MANY MEMORIES!!! I don't even know where to start... high school was great - those four years sure go fast though! (college is crazy fun too, don't get me wrong...) email me if you know me - i'd love to hear from ya ;-)

  • #32   Nashville,TN -- 2005-03-22

I agree! Southwest may have had its problems, but what school doesn't? I graduated in '02 and I can't say I did well socially @ Southwest, but almost 3 years later I am a better person because of my experiences there. I had great teachers( Mr. Myer was my favorite) and the IB program really helped me in college. To all my Lakers out there you will always have a place in my heart-- even if some of the memories were painful...

  • Cheyna class of 1993   Cambridge, MN -- 2006-04-19

It has been a long time since I have been there, but it wasn't dirty or segregated when I was there. In fact it was a pretty good school. Id the artwork you all aare refering to, is that the Indian art in the front of the school? If so, it's because they used to be the Southwest Indians.
Anyways, Mpls public schools are never gonna be perfect. There isn't enough $$ to make them that way. I had a lot of fun there. So don't trash on my school!!! If you think it's dirty, clean it up!

  • Cheyna again   -- 2006-04-19

Mr Vigen? Is he still there? I took his photo class every quarter!! He can be a pain, but he's great. I learned a lot about pictures from him and I am an avid picture taker. Funny, that name just made me laugh.

  • sam   mpls -- 2006-06-22

this is a nice pic of the school. i like the winter one better though.

  • Fei2   Japan -- 2006-08-22

Oh this picture brings back so many happy/sad memories! I had a rocky start as a freshman, but i ended up growing so much. I really loved SW! The IB program here really challenged me academically, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I have thought of SW often since i graduated, I can't wait to go back and visit soon!

  • SK   Southwest Minneapolos -- 2006-11-24

I'm s student at SW right now and i couldnt even express in words how great of a school it is... it offers so many opportunities in music, theatre,arts... anything that you want to get out of southwest.. you can get from it.. so easily.. its such an important building in the lives of so many people in minneapolis... • Michael M   Minneapolis -- 2008-01-29

I graduated in 79, and I have a son who is a freshman in HS. He chose a different school, but I was still impressed with Southwest. I still feel proud to tell people where I went to school.
In a seperate note; I think it is far more disrespectful to cover up the indian logo than it was to show it. It was never a source for disrespect, but a tribute to history.

  • rachel   -- 2008-06-07

i hate southwest even mrs.morson watever her name is she is so disrespectful i was so close to giving a lawsuit because of racism

  • steve pelkey   Melbourne Australia -- 2008-11-20

I transferred to Southwest from Roosevelt HS back in '67. Graduated in '70. Hated the Jock mentality but liked the girls. Was part of the AFA ski club. Teachers then were good.

  • Jose   Shakopee -- 2009-07-14
