I am a '71 grad of Southwest HS. Moved away from MN in '73 . I love these pictures of my old stomping grounds. My girl frield lives just beyond the picture.

Hey, the title should be "Upton" not "Uptown". Great trip down memory lane, I went to Lake Harriet elementary in the 60's and we often went to this intersection to Hawkins Grocery which was on the left. The old elementary was in the center of the shot at the y in the street, until it was razed in the 80's.

Most importantly, Paul Magers is on the billboard in the backround!I moved away from MN in 1995, and I miss him :)
I also remember Hawkins', and the drugstore around the corner was Kennesaw. Across from Kennesaw was Tom Thumb, and before Tom Thumb, it was actually a huge grocery store (I don't remember the name, though).

I lived on Richfield Road in the 1940s and 50s, went to Lake Harriet Elementary. Used to be Forshay's Drug Store on the rt. hand corner and a bakery 2 doors up. Hardware store was on the left. Gas station was on the far left corner - men used to wash the windshield, check the oil, all the old nice things. Fun to remember. Walking to school, then to Linden Hills Field to skate until the street lights came on at 5pm.

The store was actually Hawkinsons (the family still lives over on Linden Hills Blvd.). The big grocery store was the National (National Tea). I lived on Vincent from 64-81 when I went to college, my Mom lived on there until the taxes became too high for a widow to afford. At least 6 of the families that lived on Vincent prior to my families arrival still live there (and many who moved in during my life there). Lots of kids on the street in the '60s and '70s,many Nancys and Beattys (nobody names their daughter Nancy or Beatty these days). It was a great neighborhood to grow up in!
