You are looking north from Nicollet Mall and 4th Street. This is the central branch of the Minneapolis Public Library. It's fenced and barricaded in advance of being torn down. A new, larger facility will eventually replace it.
The dome on the left belongs to the Planetarium. links

I grew up in Minneapolis and went to Southwest High School. Before the Central Branch Library was built the downtown library was located in an old gothic building. A large southsea crab and a mummy were located at the entrance. It was a dark and mysterious place where I would spend my Saturday afternoons attending the planetarium exhibit amongst other things. The new Central Branch Library was sleek and new but never captured the essence of the old location.

now THIS library is gone too. probably won't be missed too much either. a new library and housing development is currently under construction at the site.

I grew up in Minneapolis too a long time ago. i loved that old library down there on Hennepin. i spent hours and hours there just looking. it will be in my memory always. the new bldgs just don't get it.
but then I'm old and maybe I don't get it either. thanks for listening
