The tops of these buildings have a soviet style minaret, or silver spheres atop a steeple. I saw this on about half the homes around Hangzhou.

I just recently came back from Hangzhou, where I learned that the metal structures on top of the farmers' houses outside the city are actually lightning rods, many of which are quite decorative.
