description
This is the east side of Hennepin Avenue near 28th Street. You are standing with your back to the Uptown YWCA. Lake Street is two blocks to the right, 28th street is just to the left. I wanted to document the colorful storefronts here. West High School used to be behind you, where the YWCA is.

I like the design of the new Uptown Diner. Is it true that a pizza place might go into its old location, owned by the same owner?
Matt Hackler Baton Rouge, LA (in exile) -- 2000-01-22
What happened to the Sri Lanka Curry House that used to be where the Uptown Diner is? And is this the new location of the diner that used to be about half a block south of Lake on Hennepin? They have such good food.
Chris Gregerson Linden Hills, Mpls -- 2000-01-22
I think you're right about the diner. I don't know what happened to the Sri Lanka, either. I remember it, but didn't notice it was gone until you mentioned it.
You're exiled quite far, I hope it's to your satisfaction. I left once, but returned withing a year or two.

Yes, the Uptown Diner (from Hennepin-Lake) has moved to 28th and Hennepin. Paisano's Pizza and Hot Hoagies moved into the old Diner site.

I moved very close to this location (27th and Emerson) a few months ago and I absolutly love it! There is so much to see and do. Also, the pictures of the old high school blew my mind! It's so weird to see the area then and how much it's changed now! Great site, btw..really good pictures.

I lived in an aptmt. at 28th and Girard. Summer of 1988. No A/C. Record heat wave (6 days 100+, 45 days 90+ true) It can get hot in the northland too.

To the earlier inquiries re. Sri Lanka. The restaurant moved from Hennepin Ave. & 28th St. to the 3200-block of W. Lake St. across the street from Market Plaza (where Whole Foods, Chipotle, ets. is on Lake St. & Excelsior) and next to Edina Realty office, close to Applebees and two blocks North-East of Lake Calhoun. I used to dine there last year (2002) and talked to the owner. He told me that he could not renew his lease on Hennepin Ave. However, recently (Nov.-Dec. 2003) I also noticed that Sri Lanka has closed on its new location as well. I do not know the reasons since I hadn't been there for a long time. When I get a chance, I will check it out.

Actually, West High sat where the condos or whatever housing now exists are, closer to 28th Street (see 1910 photo at http://collections.mnhs.org/VisualResources/VRDBImages/pf027/pf027935.jpg ...WHS was built in 1907 with an addition in the '20s which extended it west toward Humboldt Ave). The current structure is not much different in height and site placement from the high school. The Y was originally built as a new gym for the high school in 1977. Somewhere, I have super 8 film in time lapse I shot of the construction. A Western gas station was razed to allow for the gym; IIRC, it sat closer to where the Y's parking structure is. I can't recall if the parking was part of the 1977 project or was added later when the Y took control of the property. West's last graduating class was 1982, I believe, and the building was razed in 1983 or '84.

I believe my father attended West High as a sophomore in 1910. I loved seeing the picture and wonder what the school colors and mascot were, as I have an old basketball jersey of his that either came from West or Madison WI where he later moved.
Does anyone know where I can locate a 1910 yearbook from West to get copies of the athletic pictures, etc.?
Andrew Harris Oakland, CA -- 2006-12-01
I am looking for any West High School yearbooks from 1961-1964. At that time Frank Janes was the principal, and when we heard it was torn down we wanted to go sow sale into the ground. Not a good time to be there.

I'm a '67 West High Grad and just stumbled onto this site while looking for info about my cousin. We were the Cowboys, and our colors were green and white.

I'm looking for info about Angus Grant a 1940 41, 0r 42 grad.
If you have any pictures of him I would love to see them.
MAK Minneapolis -- 2010-08-17
West High colors were green and white and mascot "The Cowboys". Rouser was unique, "We Sing to Dear Old West High". The Yearbook was the Hesperian and newspaper, the West High Times.Grade schools that fed in to West were Kenwood, Bryn Mawr, Douglas, Calhoun and Whittier.
