You are standing on 3rd Avenue at Washington Avenue. This is the Milwaukee Road depot. It's been unused for years, and is old enough to be of historical significance. Some of my relatives used to arrive at and depart from here when they were young, but not during my lifetime. There are plans to develop this space and renovate this structure.

I really like your photo tour. I am vice president of the St. Paul Figure Skating Club which will be headquartered on December 4, 2000 in the new ice arena to be built in the train shed of the Milwaukee Road Depot. I have liked this structure from the first time that i saw it. I live across the street from it, and have for years. I think the idea of having a hotel built next to it, as well as ice rinks under the trainshed are foolish. Minnesota is trying to get light rail transit, as well as commuter rail, and this location would be ideal. The building was designed for rail transportation, not an amusement park, and should be used as such. Just wanted to add my thoughts. Thanks.

I agree with greg's comment it should be used for rail travel. My great grandpa worked out of that depot on the Hiawatha from 1925 untill it closed and i think it should be used as the new Amtrak depot for the Twin Cities.

Thanks for doing this. My dad worked for the Milwaukee, his office was on the second floor. We used to go there when I was a little girl. We are taking him there for his 75th birthday.

As a child back in 1965 I used to go with my family to pick up my father who worked as a brige inspector for the Milwaukee rail road. It has always been my dream to someday visit the station one again. Does anyone remember the coin wishing well in the corner or the picture booth??

I used to take a bus here from the U of M in the 1958-62 time frame, to catch a train to my home town, Owatonna, Minnesota. I really liked the train rides, and would use them again if available, which they are not in Lexington.

It is truly amazing that we still have this wonderfully nostalgic building in the heart of Minneapolis/St. Paul. I'm afraid that many others take for granted the importance of this building's role in the history of the community--and America, for that matter! The building alone is some of the last surviving evidence of the now non-existent railroad that once served it. Let's do all we can to preserve this historic landmark depot! We can't settle for less--or worse--its complete loss.

When I was in grad school, I took the "Pioneer Limited" overnight to Chicago several times to attend conventions. I would get a roomette, but never sleep. The building, and moreso, the train are/were wonderful. ANY train is wonderful!

I visited the station in October 1968 when my 3rd grade class from Oakwood Elementary school (Columbia Heights) took a field trip from Minneapolis to St. Paul. Our class was served ice cream in the dining car.

I lived in Milwaukee from 1966-1970 and I would take the train home to Minneapolis on some Friday nights and back to Milwaukee on Sundays. I too, love/loved the train rides. I knew the ticket taker and the engineers. I have a hand sketched picture of the station on my Virginia Beach wall.
