description
You are standing on First street looking toward the river(north). First Street is a few feet to your left, and Hennepin Avenue is one block to the right. This is in the warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis.
On the left is a restored brick building currently housing the Origami Restaurant. On the right is one side of the new Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank building. I chose this shot because of the contrast in style between the two buildings, one ancient and the other new. The Mississippi River is just beyond the Federal Reserve Bank.

This building was originally the Market Hotel. It was located near Bridge Square (Hennepin and Nicollet) which was a farmers market for cattle, and agricultural products in Minneapolis' early years. It became a flop house when the area became Mpls.' "skid row" It is amazing it has surived.

I wonder how this block escaped the Gateway demolition? I'm also glad the Federal Reserve didn't tear it down either!

This side of Hennepin was mostly spared from demolition largely because it wasn't as bad. Industrial activities were also still strong in the area at the time. The FED bldg. was built to surround it because it is listed as a historic structure. They did get to tear down another building on Hennepin though, I beleive it was a shoe factory/store. Gotta save one to raze one.
